Portland, O.R. - April 14, 2009

Who better to teach the meaning of the term "slam dunk" than an NBA player who learned English as a second language himself?

In the last few months, famous athletes and entertainers, like gold-selling Swedish rock band the Hives and Sasha Vujacic of the LA Lakers, have given lessons on topics like party vocabulary and superheroes on English, baby! (englishbaby.com).

"Our mission has always been to help people around the world learn English through popular culture," says John Hayden, co-founder and CEO. "We created our own ESL game show and soap opera, traveled to the Beijing Olympics to make lessons and now, with a million members and English lessons by celebrities, we've become a global media outlet."

"The million number is an important milestone," says Hayden, "and while we're certainly giving our members a chance to celebrate, we're looking forward." A new lesson series called EXTREME English, baby! debuted last week. In these lessons, one of the site's actors, Jason, who last year traveled to Istanbul to attend the wedding of two users who met on the site, demonstrates idioms in extreme ways. "Freeze your butt off" is the first episode--he goes swimming in an ice cold river.

Also on the horizon are interactive and dynamic school profiles, where English schools all over the world can vie for "fans" among the site's users. Schools will pay for these pages, which aren't like anything else on the Web, and Hayden and his team are working toward converting the site's million free accounts into paid Super Members, who can ask questions of a live teacher, download the lessons, and even view the site without ads.

"As the percentage of paid members continues to rise," says Hayden, "we'll keep creating better and better features. It's a cycle we're very excited about."
